President Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew had begun to cause a certain amount of anxiety, even before Watergate hit the news. Agnew resigned in disgrace soon after this poem was written, and was replaced by Gerald Ford. The Watergate scandal occurred soon afterward.
