(8) The Break-out as envisaged by Ley Kenyon. An escaper emerges from the tunnel into the bright glow from the guardbox searchlights. Escapes could only be made when German guards, patrolling the wire outside the compound, were well away from the tunnel exit. This ‘all-clear’ information was transmitted to the tunnel by an officer hidden in brushwood (foreground) by pulling on a rope.
