(9) The Memorial to the fifty officers shot by the Germans. It stands in the P.O.W. Cemetry near Stalag Luft III, and was built by brother officers of north compound.

An inscription on the base reads:

In Memory of the Officers who gave their lives,
Sagan, March 1944.

A committee has now been formed towards creating a permanent memorial and chapel in commemoration of the escape and the fifty men who were assassinated by the Gestapo. Complete details can be seen here.

The full story of this tunnel escape is told in "THE GREAT ESCAPE" by Paul Brickhill (Faber and Faber, 1951).
A sequel to Brickhill's book, "EXEMPLARY JUSTICE" by Allen Andrews (Harrap, London 1976) is an official account of the tracking down and capture by the Special Investigation Branch of the RAF of Germans responsible for the murders.
